1. Doctor finds anecdotal evidence that people are passing kidney stones after riding on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disney World

2. Doctor makes 3-D model of kidney, complete with stones and urine (his own), takes it on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad 60 times

3. “The stones passed 63.89 percent of the time while the kidneys were in the back of the car. When they were in the front, the passage rate was only 16.67 percent. That’s based on only 60 rides on a single coaster, and Wartinger guards his excitement in the journal article: ‘Preliminary study findings support the anecdotal evidence that a ride on a moderate-intensity roller coaster could benefit some patients with small kidney stones.’”

4. “Some rides are going to be more advantageous for some patients than other rides. So I wouldn’t say that the only ride that helps you pass stones is Big Thunder Mountain. That’s grossly inaccurate.”

5. “His advice for now: If you know you have a stone that’s smaller than five millimeters, riding a series of roller coasters could help you pass that stone before it gets to an obstructive size and either causes debilitating colic or requires a $10,000 procedure to try and break it up. And even once a stone is broken up using shock waves, tiny fragments and “dust” remain that need to be passed. The coaster could help with that, too.”

SCIENCE: IT WORKS

Update:

“In all, we used 174 kidney stones of varying shapes, sizes and weights to see if each model worked on the same ride and on two other roller coasters,” Wartinger said. “Big Thunder Mountain was the only one that worked. We tried Space Mountain and Aerosmith’s Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and both failed.”Wartinger went on to explain that these other rides are too fast and too violent with a G-force that pins the stone into the kidney and doesn’t allow it to pass.“The ideal coaster is rough and quick with some twists and turns, but no upside down or inverted movements,” he said.

I just love this because it’s HILARIOUS and yet also a perfect archetypal example of The Scientific Method:

1. Hypothesis

2. Experiment

3. Results

4. Discussion

5. Conclusions

6. GOTO 1 (the scientific method is iterative, don’t forget that part)

was this like… done in cooperation with disney management or did some  random scientist go through bag check with a 3d printed kidney and a bottle of piss and start looking for big thunder mountain fastpasses

He asked first!

Of course, the researchers had to get permission from Disney World before bringing the model kidney onto the rides. “It was a little bit of luck,” Wartinger recalls. “We went to guest services, and we didn’t want them to wonder what was going on—two adult men riding the same ride again and again, carrying a backpack. We told them what our intent was, and it turned out that the manager that day was a guy who recently had a kidney stone. He called the ride manager and said, do whatever you can to help these guys, they’re trying to help people with kidney stones.”

How To: See All Your Published Posts That Got Flagged

flight-of-the-felix:

Hi Tumblr, I’m back with another script after last night. This time it comes with actual instructions 😛 I recorded a demo video of the script running. It’s available here: https://flight-of-the-felix.tumblr.com/post/180811718885/demo-for-the-tumblr-flagging-tester

For those familiar with Tampermonkey/Greasemonkey, this is a known process. If not, follow these steps:

1. Install the tampermonkey browser extension via the official site.
2. Click the toolbar button, press Dashboard.
3. From the Dashboard, press the plus sign in the horizontal toolbar.
4. Replace all text in the editor with the code of the script, available here: https://gist.githubusercontent.com/boisei0/2ea7d7145d04a1cc5864d316271d09fd/raw/cdc766443dd32ee545c4feb41510a9abd210748b/tumblr_flagging_score_checker.js
5. Click File -> Save. The script should now enable itself.
6. Close the tab with the editor.
7. Open a new tab with the Tumblr dashboard: https://www.tumblr.com/dashboard and wait until the script is fully loaded and the black-with-white box is displayed.
8. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Since this script will now run every time you open the tumblr dashboard, disable it again after usage: With the dashboard open, click the toolbar button for Tampermonkey. Now click the switch to disable the “tumblr score checker 2.0” again.

As for those wondering about “what am I going to run on my tumblr, is it even save?”, if you would like to feel free to check the code, but what it does is get the so called “form key” from the page (tumblr uses it internally to communicate between pages, e.g. xkit uses it too). Next, this form key is used in combination with the part of the server that loads blogs in the sidebar view. The loading code returned by the server has information about whether or not posts are flagged, and a lot of extra information.

Also feel free to spread this script around 🙂

Some screenshots for additional guidance are placed below

any of yall who agree with the nsfw ban keep in mind: they aren’t doing it to keep the minors safe or to get rid of pedophiles. they’re doing it because they wanna be back on the app store. they give less than a shit about their userbase and dont think for even one second that there are good intentions behind this ban

When Tumblr bans porn, who loses?

The Vox article that I was interviewed for is up and running, and it contains some serious fuckign information about this whole fiasco.

Information that tumblr just straight up refused to provide to its userbase at all.

Unsurprisingly to those of us watching this website deteriorate over the last year, this full content purge and ban has been in progress for a solid 6 months. The date got moved up because of the child porn thing, but it was always coming for us.

Equally unsurprising: Tumblr’s management and ownership are absolutely destroying the actual staff working on it. The company has been hemoragghing senior staff without so much as a token attempt to keep them in place. So the drops in site quality are real, and wil probably only be getting worse.

Truly astonishing is the fact that apparently this crap was supposed to “double” the userbase by the end of next year. Boy, howdy, that’s not gonna work out well for them.

Verizon delete challenge

Reblogging for the great information, but also to point out that I was wrong.

While I’d considered that this was one of those ‘long term changes and a new excuse that lets us push them out’ situations, I disregarded that as being unlikely, corporate entities being famously bad at making any kind of complex decisions.

When Tumblr bans porn, who loses?

It looks like Pillowfort might not be the answer to our prayers after all.

From their host’s policy:

5. APPROPRIATE USE
No .IO domain may be used, directly or indirectly, for any purpose that is sexual or pornographic or that is against the statutory laws of any Nation. In the event of the Registry being advised by any party that a specific site breaches this condition then the Registry reserves the right to immediately deactivate the offending registration.

Pillowfort is already fixing this. Don’t kill their chances before they even start, please.

Going “Hey, the thing you’re running from might also be in place here where you’re going” is not killing their chances. I’m not over here yelling “Down with Pillowfort!” guys

Giving users information they need to protect themselves is just more important to me. Is Pillowfort is fixing it, great! The fact that they needed to switch domains says pointing this out was necessary in the first place.

Edit: That tweet was posted 10 minutes ago, after my post.

Welp. Since Tumblr is shooting itself in the foot.

You can find me on Pillowfort.io when it’s back up under: AnxiousAutisticAsexual

I also have a twitter that I don’t use: @/TroublesomBread

If we’re close you can also message/ask me for my Discord.

If we’ve exchanged words in tumblr IMs then you’re welcome to ask for my Discord. Same goes for if we’ve had a lot of cordial interactions in posts. Worst case scenario we just won’t talk on Discord bc I’m a piece of shit

Anyway the last point I have to make here is that even if tumblr breaks under the algorithm (almost certain if they don’t back out of using it) and/or everybody leaves… I don’t have anywhere else to go or post things

people like to joke about it being bad, but I legitimately really like Tumblr. it actually feels like a blogging platform in a world where facebook and twitter are active political weapons that manipulate us elections. i don’t feel like i’m baring myself to content i don’t want to see here, or having to engage with a popularity-focused culture. the content isn’t sorted to influence you or trick you. it’s a bunch of people being themselves on their own terms. it’s oldnet.

yes, i do use other websites, but i’m not interested in posting personal things to any of them. this was a place i had control over and i’ll stay with it until i can’t. and when that happens there’ll be nothing left.

Yeah, I joked that this was the last platform my mom didn’t follow me on, but it was definitely a place where I felt more open about certain things. I don’t know what else will offer that, which sucks.

when the capitalists die out either thru global warming or revolution will we be able to start homegrown internet

been reading about dual power and how to grow my own tomatoes and i’m wondering how and if we’ll be able to start commie internet lol

like obviously the internet is this huge electric capitalist controlled hardware infrastructure thing so after all that shuts down is there a way to do it ourselves lol

i want to come home from a hard day on the communal allotment, kiss my Wife, crank up my generator, and start sharing meams!

GOOD NEWS: the homegrown commie internet is in the works! Across the world, people fighting against censorship and for a more democratic internet are building mesh networks (meshnets) of long-range wifi (LoRa)

Since wifi is just a standard for sending data through radio waves, and radio waves can go a pretty long way if you use ‘em right, it’s not that difficult to connect two computers by wifi from across town. Then you just keep adding more computers to the network and you’ve got internet!

Small antennae, like for connecting across the neighborhood, can literally be built out of trash

image

And a larger, more accurate one can be built pretty cheap too

image

(You can also reuse an old satellite TV dish, or really anything else that’s roughly parabolic)

There are LoRa meshnets in places like New York, India, and all over Europe: Spain (pictured below), Greece, Austria, Germany, etc

image

As for sharing fresh mëmês, the network to go to is Scuttlebutt. Unlike most social media, Scuttlebutt posts are stored on your computer and sent directly to your friends’ computers (rather than being stored on the cloud and sent to a central server). It works just fine over traditional internet, but you can also view and interact with it offline, and it has protocols for connecting over any means that two computers can share information – that includes LoRa, as well as hardwired connections, sneakernet (basically mailing a USB stick back and forth), etc

What that means is you always know that your info is just as safe as the network it’s sent on and the computer that receives it – no one even theoretically has the ability to collect and sell it all. And, since it’s all run on your computer, there’s no servers to go down or companies to go out of business that could destroy the whole thing

You can read more about this kind of stuff here (or here if it’s cloudy in Barcelona)!

there’s also the work being done by the DCPT, left-behind Detroiters meshing together their neighborhoods to share overpriced high-speed connections among the community and producing these good good educational documents, especially this rad resource page. building meshnets to share a global uplink is very similar to building meshnets for the purpose of intracommunication and these resources are useful in both cases

I’ve had a couple people ask about how to join/organize something like this, which is great! The best list of active projects I know of is here, though you should also do a search online if you don’t see one in your area in case they missed it. For those without a nearby group, put a pin here and try contacting nearby pins as well – you can use the instructions on buildyourowninter.net as well as the DCPT’s resources as linked above to get set up!

Please reblog this version so others can get involved!

hey @markiplier remember the time pewdiepie paid people to hold up a sign calling for “death to all jews”, and made several other videos including anti-Semitic content?

anyways thanks for posting a 45 minute stream promoting his channel on the first night of Hanukkah ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I actually was a fan of yours back in middle school, i’m super sad to see that this is where your content is going.

(goyim please rb but keep your opinions off my post)

Felix made some horrible edgy jokes(not defending the jokes) that he apologized for multiple times, got punished for and accepted the punishments started a charity fundraising and yet people are still like “oh em gee remember that oNE time he said the n word?? Hes the most horrible human being on earth EVER!!!’ lmao k 🙄

Pretty sure that op said to keep your opinions off her post, but I’m sure you can just say “sorry”, keep doing the same thing and expect people to get over it.

@yesntnont  He apologized for the sign, then immediately went on to say the n-word in a stream and THEN made a video in which he made his character look like Hitler and called all the NPCs he murdered “Jews”.

An apology is worth nothing if you immediately go back to doing the harmful thing you apologized for.
