I actually feel sorry for the likely unpaid intern sitting at tumblr HQ dealing with all our bullshit and snark while those actually in charge watch the world burn from a safe distance and blame it on us damn kids not buying more products. Because ultimately this is what this about. Verizon needs to make money from Tumblr, and Verizon can’t make money cause Apple says “no adult content” and Apple has a stranglehold on the app market.
The fact that a lot of us use tumblr to host our own services and products as independent creators, often as our only source of income, is irrelevant to them. The fact that to many of us this is our community is meaningless to them. We’re acceptable collateral damage to furthering corporate greed and that’s the fucking tea on that.
Also to the hypothetical unpaid intern: leave, sweety. You can do better, and you’re worth so much more.
So, there are people that have been mapping out the ins and outs of what the content bot can detect and flag. You can report flagged items for review.
If one wanted to protest tumblr’s nsfw content ban then on December 17th you could start posting images from a collection of completely SFW images, using parameters generated by the mappers above, and then report every single one that gets flagged as inappropriate.
Maybe a site full of false positives that completely chokes their ability to respond to reports and take any action on any messages in any reasonable amount of time.
At the very least it might make them invest in setting up real moderation, even though that won’t matter because everyone will be gone by then.

Some of the comments in this thread truly astound me. Unless they’re completely asexual, most LGBT people in a romantic relationship are going to be porking on a regular basis just like any other couple. It’s not all just baking cookies and watching the sunset together, you know? Stop acting like human sexuality is this inherently dirty, exploitive, dehumanizing thing that your precious gays are far too pure and wholesome to participate in.
Also, not everybody who identifies as LGBT reads fanfic specifically for “representation” (which is a very shaky concept in and of itself). Plenty of us just want something to fap to.
Yep. This idea that the only way to be queer is to be pure and never have sexual urges is harmful and one of the many reasons anti philosophy is often tied to radical religious theology.
And believing that the only queer content that is acceptable is content that portrays us as pure and desexualized individuals is just—insane. I watch Killing Eve for the serial killer lesbian and psychological drama. Who cares if it’s not squeaky clean? Straight people are not the only group that can enjoy complex depictions of themselves.
Like. I’m a firm believer that porn online shouldn’t be within kids reach (those “are you 18” checkboxes for life) but. Like. Ok first of all, just ban cp? It’s not hard? Cp is what got you into this mess just ban it. Second of all, you could increase the age of sign-up from 13 to 18. Third of all, you could do what deviantart does and just. Require birthdays at sign-up. If your blog is flagged as nsfw, you can’t interact with minors. You want to follow an nsfw blog? Prove you’re an adult. You’re an adult but don’t want to see nsfw content? Safe search (that actually works).
It’s not hard to make a functioning website, but staff doesn’t seem to want to do that.

I scrolled back past my flagged posts, and every untagged post I’d made was right there.
So… even by @staff’s own goals this is a dismal failure that is actually serving to expose more people to explicit content than otherwise would be.

Whoa, that is some universe-brain nonsense. But it seems to be accurate that the disappearing posts are in fact appearing when you scroll past others.
I’m not sure this actually has to do with explicit flagging, though. When I go to my blog, the original of a post (the one where I’ve been talking with @queeranarchism) appears on the front page, while the reblogs of it are buried beneath. None of them look flagged and if the original was flagged, you’d think the reblogs would be too…
Also, this doesn’t quite explain why buried posts can’t be called up by following the usual links to them on the app.
But in any case, there they are.
I have that problem, but also every post that I made past 7:00 last night is not showing up on the blog, even past the flagged images. And I’m super confused right now.
